Plymouth Rock Massachusetts

With Ads here for the summer, and family being something I cherish I knew I wanted to get him down to Massachusetts at some point to meet my grandmother. My grandmother lives in Carver Massachusetts, which is very close to Plymouth. When I was young we lived in Plymouth before relocating to New Hampshire.

For those who don't know Plymouth Massachusetts is home to the Mayflower 2, which is a replica of the original Mayflower. Which is the boat the original settlers came over on from England. It also houses Plymouth Rock, which was always said to be the rock that stopped the Mayflower. Signifying to the Pilgrims that they had hit land.

Ads always being curious about American history, and the fact they don't learn the same things we do in school. Which still slightly boggles my mind but makes so much sense at the same time. We started our trek down to Plymouth.

My mom had accompanied us for the day. As we were going to be visiting my grandmother. Though having her there was also beneficial my mom grew up in that part of Massachusetts so knew her way around pretty well.

Once we got to Plymouth and had a nice visit with my grandmother, we found a parking spot right by the water. It still had 45 minutes on the meter, WIN! Adding about a dollar more we knew we had plenty of time to do what we wanted to do. Our stomachs growling signified what the first stop would be.

We had no food destination in mind, letting our eyes and noses be the deciding factor. The first place we saw was cash only, and as it's 2023 neither of us carries cash. There was an ATM outside the building but I would expect the fees to be high, especially with the convenience of it. Luckily a few buildings down we found The Pillory Pub.

The front windows were open right up leaving a counter with chairs that looked out over the water as you ate. We chose a small table in the back. There was no air conditioning in the building and on this hot day, it was kind of a negative. It's also my fault I wore a black long sleeve not thinking it was going to be very hot that day and trying to protect my sunburnt skin from the beach. The bartender who was also the waitress came over to greet us, handing us paper menus.

Ads and I don't drink, but my mom got a margarita. It came in a small glass and at first your thinking that's it for $13, but as she started drinking it she said it was quite strong and was satisfied with how much tequila was in the glass. We all got a sandwich, me and my mom both got the TBCM and Ads got the Caprese sandwich. Ads and I got a side of potato salad and my mom got the coleslaw.

When our food came out we were all happy with our choices. The sandwich was quite large and yummy. Which made up for the small side, the potato salad was scooped into one of those cups when you ask for extra sauce at a restaurant they bring it out in. Next to the large sandwich, it looked very disproportionate. Though the meal was filling enough and with the sandwich being so big I only got to take a couple of bites of my potato salad before I couldn't eat anymore.

Now that we were now full, it was time to see the main attraction THE ROCK. It was a very short stroll across the street to the rock. The stone formation around it made you think it was going to be larger than it was. As we walked up there were people all around it looking down at this rock that was supposed to have stopped a ship. As we walked up to it, I think the consensus between everyone as you hear people come up and say the same thing was, this is it? This is the rock?

This was it, this was the rock we drove almost 3 hours to see. This is what supposedly stopped a whole ship. This small rock with a date carved into it and a cage around it. After we had some good banter and talked to a nice gentleman that shared what he had just learned on a boat tour he had done. Which was the boat never hit the shore, they had stopped offshore by a few miles, let off little lifeboats and they landed on shore but they also landed about 5 miles down. The rock was only put in hundreds of years later as a memorial of them coming over.

We strolled around the little walking path and stopped by to see the Mayflower 2 from the outside. Before jumping back in the car to head back north to New Hampshire. It was still a fun day, and now Ads can say he saw where the pilgrims came over which I guess is something.
